LIGBRON Academy of Technology – LEADERS IN TECHNOLOGY
SECURITY CAMERA SYSTEMS:
In Ligbron we have 6 security camera systems that record all movement in the buildings and on the premises.
Security cameras are installed on the following premisses:
1) Boys and girls hostels and dining hall
2) 44 classrooms
3) Administration building
4) Sports fields and strategic places on the school premises
5) Clubhouse: 3 PTZ cameras that monitor the hockey, netball & rugby fields are connected to the
clubhouse to transmit live video images of the games taking place on the fields during
6) Boardroom: These cameras are also used for videoconferencing between different venues
The purposes of these cameras are not only for the safety of our children, staff and workers but are also
used to help our teachers with discipline in the classrooms as well as for videoconferencing between
classrooms in Ligbron and other schools (Ligbron e-learning project).
The security system also includes an alarm system in every classroom and building in the school. a Monitoring
program records all opening and closing areas by means of an electronic tags.
SCHOOL LAN/WIRELESS NETWORK:
Ligbron has 5 different IT network systems
1. LAN wired network between classrooms that connects all teachers to the internet as well as a DELL file server that share files between different departments.
2. Seven (7) wireless hotspot areas between classrooms for student to connect to the internet.
3. Two (2) optic fibre networks:
3.1 boys and girls hostels
3.2 30m mast that connects 5 rural schools to Ligbron
3.3 30m mast that provides network access to teachers in town.
4. Four (4) wireless hotspot areas at boys and girls hostel for free internet access.
5. Five (5) wireless hotspots that covers all areas on the Ligbron premisses.
SONICWALL FOR INTERNET SECURITY: Dynamic Security for the Global Network
This internet security device is managed by DELL and protect all users at Ligbron from unwanted websites.
The Sonicwall make it safe for all students at Ligbron to use the internet and give parents peace of mind that their children are protected when using the internet.
Dell® SonicWALL® is the first and only available firewall to receive the ICSA Labs Enterprise Firewall
Certification, while also meeting all of the ICSA Labs Next-Gen Firewall Evaluation Requirements.
The staffroom has a small IT center with a SMART interactive whiteboard, printers, scanners, internet connectivity and a wireless system.
The printers are connected to all the computers in the school for teachers to do printing from their own classroom.
Ligbron has 4 computer centers that are used for IT, CAT and Electrical Technology classes. These centers are also available for the students during
interval and after school hours. The Electrical/Electronic Technology classroom has its own computer lab for the use of experiments and research.
The following technology are used in the classrooms at Ligbron:
Advanced classroom technology in Ligbron:
SMART Interactive Whiteboard:
Ligbron has 48 SMART interactive whiteboards in the school of which 44 is in classrooms. We also have an SMARTboard in our staffroom from where our teachers share new ideas every Monday morning. Our new boardroom that was finished in May 2012, has the newest SMART interactive whiteboard on the marked with a short throw projector and a 78″ wide screen.
Since 2011 every Ligbron teacher had the privilege to work on this electronic board. An interactive whiteboard or IWB, is a large interactive display that connects to a computer and projector. A projector projects the computer’s desktop onto the board’s surface, where users control the computer using a pen, finger or other device. These boards are very expensive and is the newest and most exited education technology tool that the classroom has ever seen.
SMART Response System:
Is a handheld device that looks like a cell phone. With the push of a button on the wireless remotes, students can instantly tell you how much they know. Teachers no longer have to wonder whether all the students are keeping up with lesson material, since they’ll see precisely how well each student is doing. This insight help teachers to adapt lessons based on test results or how students respond to their questions.
Ligbron has 60 SMART response units that can be used in any subject to test the knowledge of the student by means of an electronics test that will be marked automatically after the student finish the test.
SMART Document Camera:
Used by teachers to view a science experiment in real time or display a book with text and images on the SMART Board interactive whiteboard. Teachers instantly display real-time images of any static or moving object onto an interactive whiteboard for the entire class to see. Teachers can also capture images with the document camera or use it as a webcam. This camera can zoom in on a very small object that is not visible to everyone in the classroom.
Every subject uses its own unique software that Ligbron purchase from national and international companies. Subject related software are used in Mathematics, science, technology, mechanical technology, civil technology, electrical technology, life science, social sciences, art and culture and IT. These software includes 3D animations, videos, digital textbooks, digital laboratories for science and technology and subject related topic with tests.
Videoconferencing and lesson sharing between 2 classrooms in Ligbron and between different schools:
The Ligbron e-learning project started in 2008 where Mathematics and science teachers from different schools share lessons by using videoconferencing. This technology and project is the first of its kind in South Africa and already received many awards. For more information go to www.ligbronelearning.page.tl
