Chess is an important activity at our school, involving brain power instead of muscle power. There are several major tournaments annually, as well as a school league. Players can also qualify for provincial colors and we have regularly produced such achievers, on the highest chess levels in Mpumalanga. For more information contact:

Skaak is ‘n belangrike aktiwiteit by ons skool, wat breinkrag in plaas van spierkrag behels. Daar is verskeie groot toernooie per jaar, asook ‘n skool liga. 2020

Shraddha Agre took part in the South African Chess Championships from 3-12 Jan 2020.
Shraddha and her team excelled during the tournament and took the first place in the u/18 competition. Shraddha received a trophy for the best girl in the u/18 competition with a score of 5 out of 7.
She also made it to the next level SAJCCC which will take place from 21-29 March. The best players here will be selected for the S.A Chess team.

Gert Sibande Skole Skaakliga

Die o/15 en o/19 skaakspanne aan die Gert Sibande Skole Skaakliga deelgeneem, wat by Netherland Park Secondary School aangebied was.
Die o/15’s het algeheel 4de geëindig en die o/19’s het in die gesamentlik 2de plek met Evander geëindig.

Elf skaakspelers het op Saterdag, 6 Mei, deelgeneem aan die munisipale skaakproewe wat in Ligbron se skoolsaal plaasgevind het.  Die volgende ses leerlinge: Shraddha Agre, Andiswa Khumalo, Kemaine Venter, Michael Fritz, Rhyno Swartz en Tony Mazibukodring dring deur na die Gert Sibande-proewe wat binnekort sal plaasvind.

Shraddha Agre took part in the S.A Junior Chess Championships in Boksburg from 16-19 December 2016.
Each team plays on 10 boards.
Shraddha plays on board nr 5.
Her score on board 5 was the best from all the teams.
She won 5 and drew 2 games

MPUMALANGA CHESS FINALS
The 1st Team also participated in the Mpumalanga Finals and achieved a 2nd Place : therefore qualified for the Nationals in December and after that the players will participate in the SA’s in Durban.

2011

We are proud to announce that four (3) Liggies qualified for the Mpumalanga Chess Championships, they are Gert Ehlers, André Lategan & Mpumi Sibiya. Juandré Pretorius achieved 2 ½ out of 4 possible marks during the finals.  Gert Ehlers ended the season with 8 winnings out of a total of 11

contests.

2010

During 2009 the 0/15 team won the league and ended second (2nd) in Mpumalanga. Mpumi Sibiya received provincial colors and represented Mpumalanga at the Nasionals in Cape Town. The 0/17 team ended second (2nd) in the league and fourth in Mpumalanga. James Oosthuizen also received provincial colors and represented Mpumalanga at the Nationals in Cape Town.
