‘Once Upon a Mattress“
Carien Wessels & Heinrich Burmeister
A fairy tale for young and old!It is a big challenge to find a musical that is suitable for High School students, but is relaxing and enjoyable for the whole family and a feast for eye and ear. “Once Upon a Mattress” met the requirements and made the audience laugh, they enjoyed beautiful music and felt part of the fantasy world of a medieval castle. This musical was a comic, tongue-in-cheek retelling of “The Princess and the Pea”: the Princess had to sleep on a pile of mattresses to prove to the Queen that she was a real princess and worthy to marry the Prince.
There are big shoes to fill up as successors of the Roodt couple, but with lots of support, hard work and kindness from above, we can assure “Once Upon a Mattress” Light source’s rich tradition of high quality productions continue to sit.
This year the famous fairy tale “Once upon a mattress” were staged from 11-16 August – an exciting plot which appealed to all age groups. Colorful characters, beautiful costumes, beautiful singing and decor were all on the menu this year.
This production were dedicated to Herman and Anita Roodt. These two people have paved the way for us to follow. Thank you for the wonderful rich tradition and “rhythm” that you have created at Ligbron, for all the advice and support. We honour you!

‘Beauty & the Beast“
For the very first time this school attempted to stage a musical in our own new Assembly Hall. The story of the fairy tale “Beauty and the Beast” is well known, but the sparkle, energy and excellent singing and acting of the players this year, was a feast for the eye and ear. Choreography of the highest quality under the capable hands of yet famous Ferdinand Gernandt, was seen with famous dancing steps like the Tango and Can-can. The audience was dazzled by a production full of vibrancy, awesome lighting and exhilarating music, a feast of color, sound, acting and singing again under the well known Directors: Herman & Anita Roodt.
TRIBUTE TO THE ROODT’S (18 August 2012)
Sadly, the end of the Production “Beauty & the Beast” also meant the end of an era of Productions by Mr. & Ms Herman & Anita Roodt. After 32 Years in the “business”, Mr. Roodt has been appointed as the Principal of the new Nederland Secondary School in Ermelo. Therefore, the Roodt’s is resigning as Producers of Ligbron productions and with this, leaving a legacy behind with strong foundations to build on into the future! The good news is that their followers, Ms Carien Wessels and others, were “hand raised” by these legendary Producers to now build forward on the strong foundations! On the final evening of “Beauty & the Beast”, tearful words of farewell were spoken by Herman and then Ms. Carien Wessels invited former-Liggies to bring tribute to all who participated in previous productions, and also, to bring a tribute to these two formidable people; the Roodt Couple!
‘It’s a Kinda Magic“
A view into the Queen Production in 2010: “It’s a Kinda Magic” with Ferdi Gernandt (Actor & Choreographer) in the Lead role. The Musical Production “It’s a Kinda Magic” was staged at the EHS Auditorium in October of 2010, and, again, it turned out to be a HUGE SUCCESS!! This production staged the well-known music of Queen in an outstanding, professional way and had the EHS Auditorium packed for almost every evening. The Liggie Choir could eventually see the fruits of their hard work for months on end.
Herman & Anita Roodt again could add another show to the “already long list” of successful shows, musicals and productions from the past. Ferdie & Diani Gernandt, supported by Murray Lubbe, Werner Bosman and the voices and choreography of the Liggie choir, completed the full picture of a perfect performance and very smooth finishing touches. Let’s also not forget the amazing voices of Mangoliso Shawe and Wayne Mathews (both pupils at the time) who gave a whole new meaning to the Queen Song Barcelona! Great atmosphere was achieved by outstanding lighting and decor.
Where did it all start?
The idea of Ligbron Musicals started in the 1980’s with a “Koffiehuis Concert” with Mr. Herman Roodt reading “Letters from Kleinboet in the Army”… the rest is history, the Musicals that followed “small beginnings” proofed to leave behind a legacy which unfortunately ended in 2012 when Mr & Mrs Roodt resigned their “producing careers”. Musicals will forever be remembered for the brilliance of the Productions!
Do you remember the “Golden Oldies”
